As the world is facing a climate emergency enhancing long term carbon storage has never been more important.
海草, 长得很大, 郁郁葱葱的水下草地, could be part of the solution with its ability to capture carbon from the atmosphere which is considered to be extremely high.
However, after centuries of industrialisation 而且 overexploitation many areas have been left barren. Once degraded, these former seagrass environments become a source rather than a sink for carbon. Evidence based conservation is required to reverse that loss 而且 degradation.
Associate Professor Richard Unsworth 而且 researchers in the 科学与工程学院 are developing methods that restore seagrass meadows at scale.
Working with a range of organisations including 项目海草, 天空海洋救援, 嘉士伯啤酒公司 而且 来自英国, 而且 collaborating with local communities 而且 UK Government, the team are undertaking a large seagrass restoration project in the UK have starting with the planting of 2 hectare meadows.
2公顷的海草只是一个开始. By building on progress made by scientists in the US, IM亚博的海草研究小组, 和他们的伴侣一起, are working on upscaling seagrass restoration methods - including enhancing automation, 进行现场和实验室实验, 而且 working on large scale collaborative projects such as 补种. The team at Swansea are now involved with seagrass restoration in North Wales, the Solent 而且 the Firth of Forth 而且 contributing their expertise to the creation of the UKs first 海草托儿所 总部在西威尔士.
This includes involvement with a major international project funded by the 国际 Climate Initiative (German Government). Such work includes the development of new tools for valuation of seagrass ecosystem services in a new project spanning 5 countries across the Indo-Pacific region 而且 the creation of a global citizen science programme.
- Scientists at Swansea University set up the independent global facing charity 项目海草 in order to turn seagrass conservation research into action. This is a major international success story for Swansea University.
- The Swansea seagrass team has contributed to a range of key publications on seagrass in the UK 而且 globally:
